Hyner Race Day Details

Cutoffs

Be aware that we have cut-offs for this event. We want our last aid station (top of SOB) shut down by 4pm. Our first cut-off will be mile 9. You have until 2:30pm to reach the top of Johnson Run Trail. That is a 1.6 MPH pace which is more than generous. If you do not agree with this system, please do not sign up. This is a rugged trail race and we understand that not everyone can complete this course. We expect all 25K runners/hikers to finish in under 9 hours, the 50K runners in under 10 hours. The 50K is limited to runners only — it is not to be hiked as you’ll never finish in time.

spectator access

Extremely important....the course is very remote and there are no parking areas whatsoever out there. The mountain roads are VERY narrow. The ONLY accessible aid station is Hyner View State Park at mile 4. Please relay this to any and all family/friends attending as spectators.

50K Qualifying Standards

Qualifying standards are in place to ensure both the safety of the runners as well as the consideration of our volunteers on the course. The Hyner 50K is NOT an entry level course. It is NOT intended for everyone to be able to participate. If you're worried about cut-offs, then you may want to reconsider this event. There are tons of entry level 50K's out there.

To participate in the 50k, you must provide proof that you have accomplished one or more of the following:
1. Completed the Hyner 25K course in 4.5 hours or less. Or the Hyner 50K in under 10 hours. No exceptions.
2. Completed any 50K trail race in 9 hours or less, or any 25K trail race in 4 hours or less. Road races DO NOT count. Sorry. They have no relevance to trail running in the PA Wilds.
3. Completed any trail half marathon in under 3 hours. Examples — Dam Half, Chief Wetona, Hyner Half, the Raven, or others
4. Completed the Boulder Beast in under 8.5 hours.

Bib pickup & directions

The Hyner View Trail Challenge starts and finishes at the Western Clinton Sportmen's Association (WCSA) and is located in the most scenic region of Pennsylvania. (Note: WCSA mailing address is different than actual location for those trying to use online maps.) Just look for Hyner...that's all you need!!

Since Hyner is a remote area, find Lock Haven and use this as your reference. There is one road leading out of Lock Haven towards Hyner...this is route 120 West. Starting from Lock Haven University, follow 120 West for about twenty miles. For people camping or coming in early Friday, the WCSA is on the left and there is a sign saying "Nature and Environmental Center". Follow the road up to the club. All others should park across the street at the Eagles Nest.

Bib pickup and parking all happen at the Eagles Nest, 9650 Renovo Road, Hyner, PA which is across the street from the entrance to the WCSA. Parking is in the large field on the right before the bridge and is well marked with a big yellow sign and arrows. All participants must park here, register & pick up bibs and swag inside the Eagles Nest, then walk over to the start line at the WCSA after registering. Please arrive early. Parking & registering 1,000 people will take some time. Arrows will direct you from registration over to the start/finish.

Please take the time to print out directions and study the map before you head out.  Cell phone service is extremely limited/non-existent in the area and it is very remotely populated. If arriving Saturday morning, fire police will direct you into the parking area at the Eagles Nest.

start times

50K: 8 am start

25K: 9 am start

Both races start at the WCSA. Please be sure to head up to the start line at least 15 min before your race begins.

Lodging/camping/food

Race site camping — on location
Start/finish line camping is sold out for 2019, however, we do still have tent and/or RV camping available behind the Eagles Nest (along the air strip behind packet pick up). Just make check out to the WCSA for $20 and bring to packet pick up from 3-7pm. Give your check to a volunteer as you collect your bib/packet. **If you are camping, please park along the river (back side) of the air strip as we'll be parking 1,300 runners in the morning and will need all the space available.**
