Who and what are the PA Trail Dogs?

Our trail running community is like no other. We all come from different areas & backgrounds, but our love for the trails & hiking/running has brought us together as one big trail family.

The PA Trail Dogs is a volunteer group organized and led by Craig Fleming. The group began building and maintaining trails back in 2006 in Sproul State Forest under the guidance of PA DCNR and The Nature Conservancy. The rehab of existing historical CCC trails and the need to design and build newer, more sustainable trails in the Hyner area led to the idea of the Hyner Trail Challenge and its first running in 2007. This event has become one of the staple trail races in the east with over 1,000 runners participating every April. Along with the Hyner Challenge, the PA Trail Dogs also organize the Slate Run 25K, Sproul 10K, Little Loggers Trail Fest and Smallfoot Trail Fest (kids’ races), Hyner Half, Boulder Beast, and Call of the Wilds Mountain Fest.

I love that at trail races like this, even the front runners hang out after the race and socialize. It becomes one huge party at that finish area. Can’t wait to do it again next year!!!
